It is not possible to express any opinion on such a project without an accurate survey by experts - but a bridge with 40 feet headway and in a maximum depth of 52 feet at Low water sounds like a big undertaking - Profound as Mr Lucas.
This answer is about 1400. There is also a proposal into 27/5.0. At Köln, which has a width of about the breadth of boats, the query is raised.

You 29162 Sir,
I have the honour to transmit to you with reference to Sir Henry Blake's Despatch No. 260 of the 17th July, 1901, six copies of the Report of the Harbour Master for the year 1901.
2. The question of erecting a bridge to connect the island of Hongkong with the mainland, to which allusion is made in paragraph 24, has been before the Government in several forms during the past year. There are too many demands upon Colonial funds at present to admit of the scheme being undertaken in the near future even if found practicable, but the Government has fully recognised that the subject is one which is well worthy of being considered.
I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient Humble servant, My. Gascoigne Major-General, Administering the Government.
